However, by May, I was back on track, ready to take on new challenges. My training this time focused heavily on Zone 2 runs, aiming to keep my heart rate below 135 BPM. This approach, guided by my friend Havi Jainani—a veteran runner with vast knowledge about Zone 2 training—helped me to rebuild my stamina steadily over three months.

By incorporating consistent Zone 2 runs, I noticed a marked improvement in my endurance. Although I also integrated a few faster runs before the event, my primary goal was to maintain steady pacing and ensure I was in peak condition for the hills of Satara.

Race Day Weather: A Perfect Backdrop

The weather leading up to the Satara Hill Half Marathon 2024 had been a runner’s dream. Light rains had set the stage, creating cool and fresh conditions in the days before the race. However, on race day itself, there was no rain, but the weather remained absolutely ideal—clear skies, cool temperatures, and a gentle breeze sweeping through the hills. The morning air was crisp, and the absence of harsh sunlight made the run far more comfortable than expected.

As I ascended the challenging hills, I couldn’t help but admire the stunning views that unfolded before me. Satara’s natural beauty was on full display, with the lush green landscape stretching out under the clear sky. The hills, dotted with patches of mist, created a sense of serenity and calm, which provided much-needed motivation as I tackled the inclines. Challenges and Memorable Moments

Life has its way of throwing curveballs, and this year was no exception. I had planned to travel to Satara with friends on the morning of August 31st, but last-minute plans required me to attend an event in Delhi. After attending the event, I took an early morning flight back to Pune on September 1st, and my friends kindly picked me up en route to Satara. Despite the travel hiccups, I arrived feeling strong, thanks to the solid mileage I had built during my training.

Race day came with its own challenges. While I felt physically prepared, my pace was a concern. I started slower than intended, clocking 5 kilometers in 44 minutes. My goal was to reach the U-turn (10.5 kilometers) within 1 hour and 20 minutes, but I fell behind, reaching it in 1 hour and 33 minutes—8 minutes slower than last year.

An unfortunate incident occurred at the 18th kilometer involving my friend Rohit Sharma, a veteran runner. While descending the hill, he tripped over a reflector bump while trying to maneuver around a group of runners who were walking and blocking the path. Rohit fell hard, and although the ambulance arrived quickly, a person at a nearby water station, about 100 meters away, rushed to his aid with a first aid kit. Despite sustaining bruises, Rohit’s solid willpower shone through as he completed the remaining 3 kilometers by walking and jogging, finishing with an impressive time of 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Another friend, Sanjay Sharma, a veteran runner as well, had a personal best (PB) at the event, finishing with a superb time of 1 hour and 44 minutes.

Recognizing that the second half of the course was downhill, I pushed myself to make up for lost time. I managed to finish the race in 2 hours and 40 minutes, just 5 minutes slower than my previous year’s time.

Community Spirit and Race Atmosphere

While the route remained unchanged, the event’s organisation and community support were exceptional. The hydration stations were well-managed, and the local residents’ cheers provided a much-needed boost along the way. The camaraderie among the runners was palpable, with many of us encouraging each other throughout the race. At times, I even found myself tagging along with fellow runners, sharing music and enjoying the stunning views together.

The Finish Line and Beyond

Crossing the finish line at the Satara Hill Half Marathon 2024 is always a remarkable achievement. Although my timing was slightly off compared to last year, I was content with my performance. My training had paid off in other ways—I felt no fatigue, muscle stiffness, or injuries. More importantly, I had completed the race with a sense of fulfilment and resilience.

After the race, I reunited with my fellow runners to celebrate our accomplishments. We took photos, shared our race experiences, and enjoyed the refreshments provided by the event organisers before heading back to the hotel.
