Psychological Wellbeing – A Priority

Psychological Wellbeing - A Priority

Covid-19 has achieved Pandemic Status worldwide. Our country too is battling this crisis. As the lockdown is easing out in certain parts, it’s important to measure the Psychological impact on individuals. This thought came to my mind as I see Children losing out their Concentration due to the extended lockdown and are gripped with anxiety, fear, and mental trauma.

Recently I was going through an article which is published in a reputed journal talking about the Psychological impact on Children which may last from 2.5 months to 9 years. That was really scary. Everyone is talking about the Economy, nations at large and Physical health but I do feel that Psychological impact will have its brunt on Children and adults going forward, which would never make a headline. I am seeing a very negative Impact on Children in my own society. The playgrounds are empty and Children are only busy with online classes with no clarity on many subjects which are being taught online. The schools are just trying to finish off the syllabus. How will these Children cope when schools will resume?

The Work from Office is also taking a heavy toll on adults. I am already seeing adults grappling with issues of Eyesight, headaches, and physical health. On top of it, there are long working hours. The adults are in no position even to complain on account of the Job Security / Pay Packet at the end of the month. This is definitely impacting their mental / Physical health. Going forward these issues needs to be addressed.

There are recommendations that need to be followed and I have condensed lightly from the full versions:

  • Consider how to connect with others: Video Calls with friends and family can help beat isolation
  • Help & Support others: Think about how you could help those around you-it could make a big difference to them and can make you feel better too
  • Talk about your worries: Remember that this is a difficult time for everyone and Sharing how you are feeling and the things you are doing to cope with family and friends can help them too
  • Look after your Physical well-being: Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, drink enough water, and exercise inside or outside maintaining the social norms
  • Look after your sleep: To maintain regular sleeping Patterns and keep good sleep hygiene practices
  • Try to manage difficult feelings: Try to focus on the things that you can control, including where you get information from and actions to make yourself feel better prepared.
  • Manage your media and information intake: 24-hour news and constant social media updates can make you more worried.
  • Get the Facts: Gather high-quality information that will help you to accurately determine your own or other people’s risk of contracting Coronavirus so that precautions can be taken.
  • Think about your new daily routine: Think about how you can adapt and create positive new routines – try to engage the family in cleaning, cooking, or exercising
  • Do things you enjoy: Online courses / Free tutorials etc
  • Set Goals: Setting goals and achieving them gives a sense of Control and purpose- think about things you want or need to do that you can still do at home.
  • Keep your mind active: Read, write, play games, do crossword puzzles, drawing, and Painting. Find something that works for you
  • Take time to relax and focus on the present: Relaxation techniques can help some people to deal with feelings of anxiety.

If you can, once a day gets outside or bring nature in. Spending time in green spaces can benefit both your mental and Physical well-being. If you can’t get outside you can try to get these positive effects by spending time with the windows open or arranging space to sit and see a view and get some natural sunlight.

Let’s all come out stronger post lockdown both Physically and Mentally !!
